Caverion's solutions enable building owners to join the movement to ensure electricity sufficiency in Finland. Established by the Finnish electricity transmission grid operator Fingrid, the new power system support procedure aims to prevent power cuts during the coming winter.
With the help of Caverion's digital solutions, building owners can help to prevent power shortages. Caverion's solutions will make the buildings smart, allowing energy consumption to be regulated based on energy availability and price. The smart building control system communicates with the energy grid and adjusts energy consumption to the desired level.
Caverion's demand side response solutions are enabling Fingrid's new power system support procedure, which was initiated on 1 December in Finland. The procedure is targeted to industry as well as to companies and public organisations owning properties. The procedure utilises the potential flexibility available outside the balancing power market and is activated in situations where there is a high risk of electricity shortages. In these events, Fingrid sends a support request to the sites that have signed up to the procedure.
A large number of properties are controlled at once
"We enable automatic operation in buildings according to this new power saving procedure. We are able to centrally control a large amount of properties and immediately reduce consumption. We can also smoothly return to a normal situation," says Antero Vauhkonen, Head of Digital Services, Caverion Finland. "The procedure is worth joining in to help prevent potential power cuts."
The demand side response solutions are implemented as part of Caverion's digital service package, which can also be used for other control needs. Building owners can react to weather conditions or electricity market price changes, for example, and optimise their electricity consumption when the prices are high. Consumption and savings can be monitored with Caverion SmartView.
Solutions for industrial customers
Caverion also offers demand response solutions for industrial customers. In the hydropower sector, for example, a solution is available to support pumping stations to operate according to the spot price of electricity. Caverion also helps to prevent potential power shortages by ensuring the smooth operation of power generation plants with predictive analytics solutions.
